Mac owners don't live in a vacuum. We're always "looking over the fence" to see what's being offered by the rest of the technology companies. Their existence might be suggest what should be added to Apple's product line. Then again, it's not like everything in our home or office has to be made by Apple. Below is a list of products that looked interesting to us:

  • SanDisk announced the SSD C25-G3 third generation drop-in replacement for 2.5" notebook drive based on Multi-Cell (MLC) flash technology. It is rated at 200MB/s read and 140MB/s write in capacities up to 240GB.
  • Windows 7, described by Microsoft's Steve Ballmer as an improved version of Vista, is now available in official beta form for download. According to performance testing by ZDnet, Windows 7 runs faster than both Windows XP and Vista in some key areas.
  • AlienWare showed the "M17," a laptop with quad-core processor and dual Radeon 3870s in CrossFire mode. We'd love to see a Mac laptop with those features along with dual striped SSDs for internal boot drive. It doesn't have to be thin or light. Just fast.
  • AMD introduced the Phenom II chipset that designed to be used in the Dragon PC platform along with the Radeon 48xx GPU.
  • Dell offers the XPS 625 gaming PC (based on the AMD Phenom II) starting at $999 with dual GPU option and overclocking capability.
  • Razer showed the "Mamba" gaming mouse with 2.4GHz wireless technology, 1000Hz Ultrapolling, 1ms response rate, and 5600 dpi precision 3.5G laser sensor.
  • One trend not joined by Apple yet is the "netbook." Sony introduced their 1.4 lb VAIO "P" with GPS, Cellular wireless, and WiFi built-in. Maybe Apple should offer a netbook that combines the features of the iPhone and MacBook Air.
  • Belkin's "Flywire" enables you to connect video devices like DVRs, game consoles, and Blu-ray players to a large LCD display wirelessly using a 5GHz transmitter and receiver. How about a deluxe Apple TV that does the same?
  • Palm's new WebOS is featured on their "Pre" phone which some are calling "the iPhone killer." I understand that the key developer of the iPod is leading the charge at Palm nowadays.
  • The Olympus SP-570 UZ digital camera has "the body of ultra-zoom and the soul of an SLR." Whether you are looking for 20x optical zoom or 13.5fps sequential shooting, it's a most versatile, compact camera for outdoor, travel, and sports photography.
  • Logitech has the ultimate gaming headphones, the G35 7.1 Surround Sound.
