BARE FEATS - real world Mac speed tests

'SERIOUS' GRAPHICS TESTS:
'Late 2008' 2.8GHz MacBook Pro
runs iMaginator, Motion, and GLview

TIRED OF 3D GAME BENCHMARKS?
Well, we now have a some non-game results for 'serious' MacBook Pro users. We're starting with the 2.8GHz MacBook Pro in our lab and will add results for other models of Macbook Pro as the days go by.

We used two Core Image intensive apps and one OpenGL Viewer to compare the GeForce 9400M to the GeForce 9600M GT. The question we have is if the gap in performance we saw with 3D accelerated games translate to graphics intensive productivity apps?

Stone Design's iMaginator is enables you to set up a combination of Core Image effects to be applyed to a photo. We used those effects to morph one graphic to another using 1000 frames with no delay between frames.

Apple's Motion has quite a few HD templates nowadays. We chose two of them to show how quickly each GPU can render the RAM prevew.

OpenGL is used not only by 3D Mac Games but also by such apps as Photoshop. We ran the RealTechVR's GLview 3.10 benchmark at 1440x900 32 bit using Standard Frame Buffer with 4X Multisampling, 8X Anisotropy, Fog ON, and Transparency ON.

INSIGHTS
If you are getting a Mac laptop to run Pro Apps with graphics intensive functions, you're going to want a high-end MacBook Pro with the GeForce 9600M GT (or a refurbished MacBook Pro with a GeForce 8600M GT). In my opinion, if your Mac laptop only offers a GeForce 9400M (or GMA X3100) GPU, then expect only to use it for light duty (word processing, email, internet browsing).

PSSST -- REGARDING THE NEW APPLE LED 24" CINEMA DISPLAY...
It's about time that Apple add the iSight camera to a Cinema Display! It's more expensive than the Dell 24" UltraSharp 2408WFP with its landscape to portrait pivot feature, higher contrast ratio, and faster pixel response, but I think the new Apple 24" Cinema's LED-backlit screen, aluminum and glass enclosure, integrated iSight camera, and MagSafe charger make it worth the extra $$$. It's certainly better eye candy and matches the MacBook and MacBook Pro more closely than the alternatives.
